- Asteroid 2005 WJ56 with CCD passes directly near Beta Aurigae!

I photographed asteroid 2005 WJ56. It was very easily visible with a 10" Newtonian Telescope and a Starlight XPress MX7C CCD camera with only a few 5s frames due to the wind! It moves quite fast. At about 22:41 UT today on 07/01/2008 it passed directly near the bright star Beta Aurigae (Menkalinan)! It was so easily to locate! In a small path on the earth's surface there was an occultation of the 2mag star Beta Aurigae by the asteroid!
The following calculation is only roughly:
- Diameter of the asteroid: 1,2 km Distance: guessed 5 Million km
- Angle 1,4 -5 Degree
- Diameter of Beta Aurigae: 4 Million km Distance: 82 LJ = 8x10 +14 km
- Angle 3x 10 -7 Degree
The Asteroid is 50x bigger concerning the angle. When it passes 60km it occults the bright star. So I suppose that the star was occulted for about 1s in the center line.
Compare the "star" going from the left top to the right bottom!
The Asteroid is the dot in the center!
